EFMs May Qualify for Annuity Benefits

Eligible family members (EFMs) who have actively worked part-time or full-time cumulatively for at least five years of civilian service may qualify for annuity benefits. EFMs serving on Family Member Appointments (FMA), and who contribute to the Civil Service Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS), are encouraged to review their personnel actions in eOPF to verify their status. EFMs under FERS are eligible for an annuity benefit at age 62 with at least five years of creditable civilian service. EFMs with at least 10 years, but less than 30 years of service, can receive a benefit at their Minimum Retirement Age (MRA) with an age penalty. For questions about retirement and annuity benefits, please contact HRSC@state.gov.
